Oviedo arts update: New art for city postcards, opera proposed

Oviedo may have a more ambitious 100th anniversary if the performing arts can be a part of it, namely Opera Orlando.

The Oviedo art world is getting a number of updates.

Following the July 15 presentation of a new watercolor map by artist Caryn Dahm, which is displayed at City Hall, the city’s Public Arts Board is planning ways to further utilize the artwork.

During its July 17 meeting, the board discussed having postcards of the map created to add to its collection of five already available for purchase at City Hall.

The map, which shows key landmarks of the city, would be one of two new planned postcard designs. The other suggested design choice is the mural at Round Lake Park celebrating Oviedo’s Black history.

“It’s another beautiful mural, and we already owned the design, so that would be an easy one for us to make a postcard of,” Development Services Director Teresa Correa said.

The creation of the new postcardswould still need to be approved by City Council to proceed. An unofficial estimate for the cost of printing 2,500 postcards is about $500, and would come from the Public Arts Fund.

The five original postcards first went on sale in March 2020, and were also created by local artists. Among the designs is the mural that is featured at Oviedo on the Park.

Opera coming to Oviedo

The Board also has proposed bringing Opera Orlando to Oviedo to perform at the Oviedo on the Park amphitheater.

The performance would be an English version of French composer Jules Massenet’s “Cendrillon,” or Cinderella.

It would be free to the public on a to-be-finalized date in February. It is expected to cost the city about $5,000 from the Public Arts Fund, and at least part of the sound system is expected to be donated, Correa said.

Board member Jillian Morrisini, who has performed with Opera Orlando in the past, brought the idea to the board as a way to increase access to a form of art often seen as out-of-reach for many.

”I just really thought it would be great to have some live music in Oviedo, just kind of spreading out the types of art we do, and because that’s where my expertise is, it was easy for me to reach out to them,” she said. “It turns out they have this fabulous program that’s geared toward families and making [opera] more accessible. It does sometimes seem [to be] something that is for other people.”

It is being discussed as being part of the city’s 100-year anniversary program, as well.

“I think the intention is for this to be part of that, which kind of fits nicely,” Morrisini said.

The proposal would still need to go in front of the City Council for approval to officially move forward.

“Music is a strong way to offer art manifestation,” Correa said. “I think it’s going to be very cool.”
