City event changes in Oviedo

There’s a possible first for the City of Oviedo in the works: A St. Patrick’s Day festival. But other events this year could get the axe.
On Aug. 23, Oviedo City Council got an update on its 2021-2022 list of events. Oviedo Recreation and Parks Director Dru Boulware said they met with a group a few weeks ago who’s planning and fundraising for the St. Patrick’s Day festival, which is currently slated for March 19. He said many people have requested this event over the years.
Meanwhile, another city event is possibly on the chopping block. The holiday parade that usually streams through downtown Oviedo is currently absent from the events list due to a lack of participants. Bridget Lake, president of Oviedo-Winter Springs Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the parade, said only three groups have committed so far. But, if more join in, the event could take place on Dec. 11.
Fourth of July is another event currently on the books but is on shaky ground. The city is seeking a new fireworks vendor and a new location for the event since the property they usually use near the Oviedo Mall may be sold. The city is looking into the Spray Fields–a 60-acre property near City Hall–and Center Lake Park as possible locations.
