A foggy start to Oviedo Run Club’s 6th Oviedo Spring Rising 5K and 10K
Oviedo Community News’ team did our second 5K in two weekends at the Oviedo Run Club’s Spring Rising 5K and 10K, where local runner Giles Williams finished his 1,000th 5K.
More than 350 runners and walkers took part in the 6th annual Oviedo Spring Rising 5K, 10K and Kids’ Fun Run March 21 with a foggy 7:30 a.m. start at Oviedo Methodist Church. The course took runners through the grounds of Crosslife Church before a cross-country-style off-road descent into the Cross Seminole Trail to head north toward the S.R. 417 bridge and Winter Springs beyond. It was the Oviedo Community News team’s second 5K in two weekends after the HOPE Helps Sham Rock N Run 5K.
Simon DeVoss of Mims won the race overall, with a time of 16:29.81. Carla Chavez Ramirez of Oviedo won the women’s division overall with a time of 21:10.01. The women’s division was especially competitive, with the podium finishers within 13 seconds of each other, with Sheboygan, Wisconsin’s Gaoleh Lor finishing second and Oviedo’s Tara Brewster in third.
Bib numbers started at 1,000 in honor of local 81-year-old runner Giles Williams and the 1,000th 5K he’s run in his life. He finished in 33:43.89, winning the men’s 80-99 division. You can see him crossing the finish line and breaking the tape below.
The race benefits underfunded educational gardens at local schools.
