Oviedo Student Chosen as Inaugural Dorothy L. Hukill Scholarship Winner
Oviedo native Brandon New, an undergraduate student at the University of Florida, is the first winner of the Dorothy L. Hukill Scholarship with The Fund for American Studies (TFAS). Brandon, a graduate of Oviedo High School, attended the TFAS program in Washington, D.C. this summer.
The Fund for American Studies (TFAS), in partnership with the Dorothy L. Hukill Foundation, has announced the first recipient of the Dorothy L. Hukill Scholarship: Brandon New. Brandon, an Oviedo native, is an undergraduate student at the University of Florida and is a 2024 graduate of Oviedo High School.
The Scholarship was established in memory of Dorothy L. Hukill, who served in the Florida Senate and the Florida House of Representatives from 2004-2018. During her public service career in the Florida Legislature and previously in local government in Volusia County, Dorothy championed economic freedom and public service. While serving in the Florida Senate, Dorothy passed away from cancer in 2018.
Brandon studies finance, pre-law, and public service at UF. As a TFAS student this summer, New interned with the National Association of Business Political Action Committees (NABPAC). Due to his strong participation, intellectual curiosity and professionalism throughout the program, New earned the Outstanding Student Award for the Business & Government Relations track.
“This summer was truly a life-changing experience,” New said. “I leave Washington with new friendships, a stronger professional network, a deeper understanding of public policy, and an even greater desire to continue my career in public service.”
Brandon has been involved with the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, the University Economic Society, First Generation Lawyers at UF, and the Business Law Society. Earlier this year, Brandon served as a legislative intern in the Florida House of Representatives.
The Hukill Scholarship was created to provide an opportunity for outstanding college students to spend a summer living, learning and interning in Washington, D.C.
Applications for the 2027 Summer Program are open now. Florida residents are encouraged to apply for the Dorothy L. Hukill Scholarship at DCinternships.org.
